A nice morning in Oslo

After staying up late last night to watch US election results (until CNN called Ohio, then I knew it was over), I trudged off very sleepily this morning.  I was excited, but also exhausted.  That is, until I started meeting people.

People from all around the world in my class this morning were absolutely thrilled to talk to me.  Collectively, the energy level of the room was at least twice as high as any class before.  I’m well aware that this honeymoon phase with President-elect NotBush will likely wear off.  Obama will eventually say or do some things that upset the rest of the world.  I know this is true.

Even so, it sure felt nice to have people excited about the fact that I am American.  It felt nice to not immediately begin a conversation on the defensive.  It felt nice to see others enthusiastic about my country again.

polarI guess we all just want to be liked.

On a side note, this was easily the best campaign sign I saw here in Oslo (apologies for the camera phone pic).

I love its tongue-in-cheek support.

A sad day at Aftenposten

So long, farewell

Aftenposten has now stopped producing its “News in English” service. Those of us on Aftenposten’s English news desk would like to thank our thousands of readers around the world for clicking in over the years. Our archived stories will still be available.

We’d also like to thank our readers for all the e-mails of appreciation and good wishes that have arrived during the past two weeks. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response, from all over the world and not least from non-Norwegian readers here in Norway who say they have relied on us to bring them some local news and help demystify the country where they now live. Many of you have written that we helped explain Norway, that we provided a link to the land of their ancestors, or that we simply offered some entertaining stories from far away.

It’s been impossible to answer all the mail, but it has cheered us greatly, and reminded us once again that it’s you, the readers, who have made this all worthwhile. We will miss you, too.

“Med vennlig hilsen,” as the locals would say,

As I mentioned before, I’m disappointed to see the service go.  It has been an invaluable resource for this blog and they did a very good job.

In other news, that election thing seems to be dominating the coverage worldwide

Unofficial US election poll

OK.  You might have heard that there is some election thing going on in the United States tomorrow.  Well, Norwegians have heard about it as well.  In fact, whenever anyone hears that I am American, it’s the first thing they want to talk about.

“Who do you support?”

“Who do you think will win?”

“I really hope Obama wins.”

I’ve had this conversation at least a hundred times since August.  The most interesting thing about these conversations is not their subject matter (which lost its luster a long time ago), but their content.  On the basis of that third statement, the results of my unofficial polling around Oslo:

I admit it.  I fudged on the Obama number.  It’s just an estimate, but it’s my best guess.  The McCain number was very easy to remember (Hi Lars!).  Unfortunately for Obama, though, Norway still has 0 electoral votes.
